Foreign investors play a key role in the Mauritian economy. Many are connected through chambers of commerce representing their home countries, including the Indo-Mauritius Chamber of Commerce, the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the South African Chamber of Commerce in Mauritius, the Chinese Business Chamber and the Australian Chamber of Commerce.
Choosing the right business structure
Whether you choose to set up as a self-employed entrepreneur or through a company, Mauritius offers a multitude of possibilities depending on the nature and scale of your project. You can opt for a Domestic Company, an offshore company (Global Business Company and Authorised Company) for international trade, set up the headquarters of your multinational as a Global Head Quarter, create a Trading Company or a Private Trust Company, among other options.
Hiring in Mauritius
The Mauritian workforce is bilingual (French and English) and generally well educated, whether through local universities or overseas studies. That said, certain sectors face labour shortages, which the government is addressing by easing procedures for hiring foreign workers.
As of January 2026, the minimum wage is set at Rs 17,745, and employers should also account for social contributions (CSG, National Savings Fund, HRDC Training Levy, etc.).
Business taxation in Mauritius
In Mauritius, the fiscal year runs from 1 July to 30 June of the following year.
If you operate as a self-employed professional, you are only liable for Personal Income Tax on your individual earnings, with progressive rates ranging from 0% to 35%. Find more details about it on our article about taxes in Mauritius.
Legal entities (local and offshore companies, trusts, partnerships, and others) are subject to Corporate Tax at a standard rate of 15% on gross income. Corporates, other than banks, having annual chargeable income and supplies above Rs 24 million will be required to pay a Fair-Share Contribution at the rate of 5% of chargeable income.
However, a range of available deductions may reduce the effective tax rate. Your accountant or the EDB can advise you on applicable allowances.
In Mauritius, the standard VAT rate is 15%. Any business or self-employed individual must register for VAT and charge it on their invoices if their annual turnover exceeds Rs 3 million.

It is strongly recommended to work with the Economic Development Board (EDB), the government agency dedicated to investment support, or a consulting firm such as Navitas to guide you through your project and administrative procedures.
