Public transportation in Mauritius
Enjoy the public transportation in Mauritius: bus, metro, taxis and private chauffeurs...
Having your own vehicle is often the easiest way to get around Mauritius, but it is not your only option. Public transport, taxis and private chauffeur services can be convenient alternatives, particularly for occasional trips or if you live in a well-connected area.
As Mauritius works to ease traffic congestion and develop more sustainable ways of getting around, new mobility solutions are gradually becoming part of everyday life. Here is an overview of the alternatives to driving your own car in Mauritius.
Taxis & private chauffeurs in Mauritius
Taxis are convenient for occasional trips but can be expensive for everyday use. Unlike in many countries, Mauritian taxis do not use meters, so be sure to agree on the fare before setting off. As a guide, expect to pay around Rs 1,200 for a journey from Grand Baie to Port Louis, Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500 for an airport transfer, and Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 for a full-day taxi hire (depending on your starting point and your negotiating skills...).
Ask any Mauritian friends you meet for taxi contacts. Alternatively, the concierge service at the nearest hotel can put you in touch with a taxi.
Several taxi-booking apps are also available in Mauritius, making it easier to book a ride and check fares in advance. These include Uber in partnership with Ala-lila, DodoGo, Yugo, MoApp, and Nuale.
If you have your own vehicle, services such as Coco le Bob and My Chauffeur by FLO allow you to book a private chauffeur – ideal for an evening out or whenever you would rather not drive.
Bus & metro in Mauritius
If you are up for a bit of adventure, hop on a bus! Inexpensive and serving the entire island, buses make it easy to get around, although journeys are often longer than by car and comfort can be fairly basic. Be sure to carry some change, as fares are paid in cash to the conductor. The MoMove app lets you check routes and timetables.
In the Central region, the Metro Express offers a fast and comfortable way to get around. It currently operates two lines: Port Louis–Curepipe and Rose Hill–Réduit, via Ebène. Fully electric and air-conditioned, it runs seven days a week with trams every 10 minutes from 6 am to 7 pm, and until 9 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets are available from any Metro Express station.
